Chainmail -
What is chainmail? Maille is an armor made from interlocking rings to form a net to catch blows.
Today it is most commonly made from butted links, that is, rings whose ends are just pushed together. Butted rings can easily be pulled apart by hand and so do not make good armor. Maille was, historically, made from riveted rings, that is, rings which are riveted closed. The ends were overlapped, flattened, punched trough, and closed with a rivet to keep them from opening. Riveted ring armor was very good at protecting against most weapons of the day. It could stop a slash, cut, or stab from swords and daggers, and could resist puncture by arrows and spears. Maille was moderately effective at absorbing part of the energy of a blow. However, a strike with a heavy weapon, like an axe, mace, or hammer, could break the bones of the wearer underneath.
Atlanta Armory -
The maille I make consists of rings that are individually welded shut so that the weld is stronger than the wire itself. I am one of the very few manufacturers of hand made welded maille and have the widest selection of welded maille anywhere.
I gaurantee my maille in two levels according to ring size.
Level 1 - 5/16", 3/8" - If any link fails in SCA or similar combat I will pay domestic shipping both ways and repair the maille for free.
Level 2 - 5/32", 3/32" - If the maille is damaged beyond a few missing links (like a tear or rip in the piece) I will pay domestic shipping and repair it for free.
