Aventails are mail curtains that hang from a helm to protect the neck. Historically they were used on bassinets but today have been adapted to other helms as well.

In most kingdoms of the SCA one can abstain from wearing a gorget if using an aventail. I highly recommend wearing a gorget underneath your aventail especially if it's made from titanium.
